Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular decisions from the official, following the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
